Dimitri Shostakovich’s initials (D – S* – C – H) serve as the basic motif, which is introduced in a prologue with rigid diction. In the eight movements, this motif is projected onto very different musical characters, which often then have an additional contrasting insertion within these movements. These character pieces are freely chosen and owed to the musical environment in which I found myself during the composition of the trio.
* “S” refers to the German name “es” for E-flat, and the German note name “H” denotes the pitch B in English.
