PIANO TRIO NO. 1

FOR VIOLIN, VIOLONCELLO AND PIANO (2001)

Piano Trio No.1 was commissioned by the German ABEGG-Trio, whose name derives from a theme (op.1) by Robert Schumann. The tone sequence A-B-E-G-G* thus forms the starting point for the five-movement composition and is prefixed to it as a motto. The motto is quoted several times in the movements, which contrast strongly in character, sometimes clearly, sometimes hidden. The tonal material was developed from A-B-E-G-G with the help of graphic processes. This created a harmonious balance between chordal structure and motivic gestures despite strong contrasts in expression.
*Note: In German, the note “B” stands for B-flat.
